Some #MersennePrime news: on December 26, 2017, Jon Pace of the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search found that 2^77232917-1 was prime. It was the 50th *discovered* Mersenne prime, but on September 8th all double-check tests on Mersenne numbers below it have finished, officially confirming it to be the 50th Mersenne prime overall!

Learned about the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) this morning. There's just something about prime numbers, I think I'll add my computer to the search this evening.

Mersenne primes are of the form 2^p - 1, and currently the largest known prime is a Mersenne prime found by GIMPS. Exciting stuff!

Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search - Finding world record primes since 1996. GIMPS is an organized search for Mersenne prime numbers using provided free software.

2⁷⁴²⁰⁷²⁸¹-1 is the 49th *discovered* Mersenne prime, discovered by Curtis Cooper at the University of Central Missouri in early 2016. All numbers of the form 2ᵖ-1 (where p is prime) must be double-checked to ensure no primes are missed.

Good news: there's only 7 more double-check tests to go until 2⁷⁴²⁰⁷²⁸¹-1 is *officially* proven to be the 49th Mersenne prime *overall*!

You get assigned a 419-digit exerpt of the prime for you to say on video, then everyone's videos saying their digits are put in a row so everyone says the prime number in full.
