Pay to Merkle Tree — BIP360 e defesa contra ataques quânticos

What is the checksum of a directory? Introducing sumfolder1

by @beet_keeper

In Fractal in detail: What information is in a file-format identification report? I describe the different ways of dissecting the information in a file-format identification report.

A file-format identification report is a data-rich artifact created during the processing of digital collections.

I had the idea of using this type of report to attach a checksum to an archival collection (files, and directories) as a whole. This is done using methods akin to a Merkle Tree, similar to those in source control systems such as Git, and Web3 Blockchain projects like Bitcoin.

This project is called sumfolder1.

I wrote a small blog post about using Merkle trees in Go — not for blockchains this time, but just to track changes in a local folder.

It watches file contents, recalculates a Merkle root, and can even verify proofs or visualize the tree in your terminal.

Nothing fancy — just a fun and useful exercise.

How to sign a bit: generate two random values. Compute the SHA256 of each, and publish the SHAs labeled 0 and 1. Now to sign a 0, publish the first random value. To sign a 1, publish the second. Verification is just confirming the random value hashes to the previously published hash.

Sounds impractical? You can build a whole practical digital signature system on that basis, and it's quantum-resistant. #MerkleTree

The #MerkleTree was patented in 1979, so what suddenly happened at the turn of the century that flavors of it started to spread into widely known software as a core architectural component?

Was it just a matter of 7 years of WWW and internet with public availability blooming into thoughts on ubiquitous distributed computing around then?
