Dear lazyweb: How do people find mentors? How does one become a mentor?

Are there any really good programs that help mentors find people to mentor, or vice versa?

There are a bunch of ways I've been a mentor, but they've all been as part of an established teaching and learning and knowledge sharing process.
* I've mentored groups as part of SANS' various academies.
* I've mentored individuals who are building a conference presentation, as part of a program put on by the conference
