𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆 — a reminder that meningitis can strike anyone, anywhere, and can kill within 24 hours. It also leaves many survivors with lifelong disability. This year’s theme, “United in the race to defeat meningitis,” calls for global partnerships to reach the WHO goal of defeating meningitis by 2030.
𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀:
- 2019: 1.6 million cases and 236,000 deaths worldwide. Infants and young children are most affected.
- In WHO South‑East Asia: ~27% of global cases, ~19% of deaths; attack rate ≈ 7.6 per 100,000; CFR ≈ 18%.
- Vaccines protect against the main bacterial causes: meningococcus, pneumococcus and Hib. Hib vaccine is in all regional countries; PCV and meningococcal vaccines are expanding.
- Prevention needs high vaccine coverage (≥90%), better surveillance, improved diagnostics, timely treatment, and support for survivors.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆:
- Check that you and your family are up to date on Hib, pneumococcal (PCV) and meningococcal vaccines.
- Know the warning signs: sudden high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, vomiting, confusion, sensitivity to light, and seizures — seek emergency care immediately.
- Share accurate information and encourage vaccination in your community.
- Support survivors and families who face long-term effects.
We can reduce deaths and disability by acting together — awareness, vaccination and prompt care save lives.
