4/5: It took me some while to get through this because a) this is a long-ass book and b) I had to repeatedly set this aside because I had so many library books to read. Poor dear, sorry about that. Also, I’m amused by the book’s title: the main story spans over nine years and the extra part takes another decade or so, so the title applies to the first part only, lol. Anyhoo. I knew going in that the romance side would be the slowest of burns and very much in the background but I didn’t really mind. Is Meng Xi Shi 梦溪石's pen name ('dream creek stone') a reference to Shen Kuo's Dream Pool Essays / Meng Xi Bi Tan 梦溪笔谈 ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_Pool_Essays

One of those moments where you put two things together and feel a quantum superposition of foolish for not noticing before, and foolish for making things up! In my defense, the title of Dream Pool Essays is the only place I have ever seen 溪 translated as 'pool'. I'm so curious whether this is a real reference.

Reading chapter 9, volume 1 of “Thousand Autumns” 🌸 This first volume feels as if it is laying the groundwork for the main plot and couple. Shen Qiao’s character and backstory are a mystery even to himself because of his injury and there seems to be no rush to unveil his past.

Shen Qiao’s relationship with the young Chen Gong shows that he is a truly nice person. His instincts are clearly still intact but all his abilities + even his health are compromised.

Have begun reading “Thousand Autumns” by Meng Xi Shi 🌸 Am only on chapter 4 but it seems to be well written with good characterization and philosophical reflections. It opens quite suddenly with Shen Qiao falling off a cliff and Yan Wushi deciding to have him nursed back to health. They are clearly very different people so it will be interesting to follow their relationship unfold.

It's funny and a real fun to read! Also, stories set in the Sui dynasty is super rare!

Edited to add: I forgot to mention, this is in the same universe as Thousand Autumns but you don't need to have read Thousand Autumns to read this. The characters in Thousand Autumns have a small cameo, that's about it
