Misha Glenny, Today Programme, and Social Media Ban

Feedback

It's a new series of Feedback. Andrea Catherwood sits down with Misha Glenny, former foreign correspondent and investigative journalist to talk about taking on the reins of In Our Time, following Melvyn Bragg's departure from the programme last year. Did Misha's long years in the fields of academia, Investigative journalism and being a BBC Foreign correspondence prepare him from taking on topics that range from cybernetics to Handel's Messiah?

We also received a comment from a listener who feels that the Today programme is changing editorially with too much chat between presenters.

And coverage of the new social media ban for under 16s in the UK has been featured heavily on BBC radio's news programme. A listener shares their opinion on PM's recent coverage of this move.

Finally, another nomination for our annual search for Interview of the Year. This time it's for an episode of Private Passions on Radio 3, in which presenter Michael Berkeley interviews sports and nature writer Simon Barnes.

Silicon
In Our Time

Misha Glenny and guests discuss the physics, biology and chemistry of the element silicon which is at the heart of some of the most useful and beautiful objects on the planet. While it is still being created throughout the universe, the silicon we have here was made billions of years ago in dying stars. In its compounds we have long used silicon for glass and, more recently, purified silicon has become the foundation of modern electronics. Perhaps less appreciated is the role silicon compounds play in the biology of life on Earth, on the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the cycling of elements between land, oceans and atmosphere that sustains us.

When I feel sad and angry about the BBC's willingness to be Nigel Farage's megaphone, I try to save myself from plunging into despair by remembering the kind of broadcasting which Melvyn Bragg exemplifies.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the scholar who revived learning for its own sake in C8th

Some of the @BBCRadio4 #InOurTime episodes absolutely grip me (like today’s ‘The economic consequences of the peace’) whereas others bore me to tears. The incredible thing is that #MelvynBragg seems passionate about every single episode. His breadth of knowledge and capacity to make insightful observations on any subject under the sun is mind blowing. He’s still sharp as ever at 83. Respect. #radio4 #bbc
