Canada needs to be more aggressive in its responses to Trump's belligerence. Among many other things, we should be doing these immediately:

1. Send Canadian troops to take part in defensive exercises in Greenland. This was a no-brainer, and the fact that Carney didn't instantly jump on it is a black mark for Canada's history.

2. Axe - don't delay, completely cancel - the F-35 fighter deal. If there's a way to (legally - we're not Trump) get out of the current obligation of another squadron of them, do it.

3. Sign the Gripen deal.

4. Start hurting US businesses, more than we have been. Buying less of their booze is one thing, but we should be doing things like closing Canadian airspace to American-owned carriers. No more great-circle routes to Europe from most of the USA. Look for other opportunities to cause economic pain. Trump doesn't give a damn; nothing will stop him from doing whatever he wants. We - and the rest of the world - have to motivate the US public, its business leaders, and its legislative branch to remove him, and anyone that comes after him that tries to walk the same path.

Trump's latest #tantrum about Canada is nominally about our digital services tax.

But I don't buy it. That's been known about since long before the orange moron was elected.

I'm guessing the bit that has actually irritated him / the evil mastermind with a hand up his ass [1] is Canada's likely decision to scrap it's F-35 military jet purchase, and instead go with the Saab Gripen (which has been publicly acknowledged to be under consideration for some time, but which was almost certainly discussed during the NATO summit this past week).

The #Gripen is *far*, far cheaper to build, and even more dramatically cheaper to operate. The estimated per-flying-hour cost of the Gripen is $4,700 (Jane's, 2012). The F-35 figure from the same report estimates $26,000 for the (land-based) F-35A, and $38,000 for the carrier-VTOL F-35B/C.

There's also the benefit that the Gripen would be co-made in Canada, with #Saab locating factories and working with Canadian suppliers..

The US military-industrial complex is *not* happy with their disappearing export markets and their untold billions of dollars of revenue going down the tubes due to the rest of the world realizing that the USA is no longer a stable, reliable partner or even ally, and that buying weapons from them no longer makes any sense.

Just when you thought he couldn't get stupider or more historically ignorant...

His Orangeness Mango Mussolini, the Melon Felon, has a bee in his bonnet [1] about canals, but it's not just about #Panama now. On his social network - a fork of Mastodon, of course - he wrote:

The Panama canal, maybe.

The Suez canal, however, was proposed by a #Frenchman, financed primarily by #Europeans, built by forced and voluntary labour sourced from countries in the region under the management of the French, and then operated by a French company with a contract for 99 years.

The USA had absolutely #zilch to do with the Suez canal. Which is probably for the best, because the USA was kind busy fighting its own civil war and then the #reconstruction that followed it - the canal was built from 1859 to 1869.

So, Mr. Trump: pull your head out of your ass, admit your ignorance, apologize to Egypt, France, and the rest, and slink off to your history-free corner of D.C. with your tail between your legs.

[1] Maybe it's good he has a bee in there. There isn't much else rattling around in that particular bone soap dish.
