It sounds great: #Western #companies #invest in #Nigerian and #Kenyan #agricultural companies, among others, so that harvests grow and #hunger is reduced. But according to many #researchers, this #charity is mainly good for the profits of Western multinationals, and there is no evidence that more food is being produced. They even speak of 'hunger #politics'.
More and more people in East, West and Central Africa are going hungry and struggling to get enough #healthy #food. One of the #organizations that has said it wants to do something about this for almost twenty years is #AGRA, founded by multi-billionaire and #Microsoft founder Bill #Gates and active in 18 countries and with 30 million #farmers. But African #agricultural organizations accuse AGRA of 'hunger politics': aid in which, for example, #artificial #fertilizers, improved seeds and #pesticides are essential, so that the #profits from these agricultural models mainly flow to a small group of companies that #produce such #products.
AGRA was founded in 2006 with the stated aim of a green revolution in agriculture in Africa. The name then stood for Alliance for a Green #Revolution in Africa . Bill Gates, the big man behind the project, wanted to use his billions of dollars to help African farmers with modern agricultural #techniques. These techniques would increase production, putting an end to the hunger that has gripped the continent for decades.
There is no evidence that these investments produce more food
AGRA has invested $1 billion in agricultural projects on the African continent since 2006. For that money, it provided training to small farmers on fertilizer and the right seeds, founded seed companies, conducted research and lobbied for legislation. The money largely comes from the Bill and #Melinda Gates #Foundation and Western #governments, including the #Netherlands , which makes money, #technology and #knowledge available. In addition, AGRA projects are often financially supported by national governments in Africa itself.
Despite the enormous investment, there is no evidence that AGRA has increased farmers' production. For example, studies by Tufts University in the US and a study commissioned by AGRA's financiers find no hard evidence that AGRA's projects have led to higher food yields. On the contrary, there were more deaths from starvation, farmers fell into debt because they had to borrow money to buy seeds and fertilizer and the soil is less fertile...
