I love having public holidays but Melbourne Cup is such a ridiculous one even if you leave aside all the important concerns about gambling and animal welfare. The AFL grand final one is silly too but at least that's for a sport a large portion of the population regularly watches, is a locally created game embedded in our culture and is one many people currently/previously played at some level. As for the Melbourne Cup, the portion of the population that's been on a horse since year 9 school camp is surely very small. Most people have probably never even been to the races and unless they have a gambling problem aren't regularly following racing results. If we are going to create public holidays for niche interests surely there's better choices
