Und oft diente die italienische Stadt Matera als Kulisse für das Heilige Land. Hier entstanden sowohl Pier Paolo Pasolinis frühes Meisterwerk «Il Vangelo secondo Matteo» als auch Mel Gibsons kontroverse Interpretation «The Passion of Christ». Gibsons Film sowie Martin Scorseses «The Last Temptation of Christ» sorgten 1988 beziehungsweise 2004 für Aufsehen und Skandale. Auch Milo Raus Interpretation über das Traditionelle hinaus. Der Schweizer Regisseur verknüpft in «Das neue Evangelium» die Jesus-Geschichte mit aktuellen sozialen Kämpfen und präsentiert einen revolutionären Christus. Die Herausforderungen der Rolle werden durch die Erfahrungen von Mehdi Dehbi, Hauptdarsteller der Netflix-Serie «Messias», greifbar: «Dann sagen sie ‹cut›! Und schauen einen immer noch an. Ich weiss nicht, worauf sie gewartet haben. Auf ein Wunder?» «Der Jesus, der sich am besten verkauft, ist der Erlöser, der Sohn Gottes. Diesen Film kann man jedes Jahr machen», sagt denn auch Hollywood-Starregisseur Paul Verhoeven, dessen Jesus-Film bisher niemand finanzieren wollte.
