Crustmas day 6! 🦐

I saw some posts with these ostracods (Strandesia sp.(?)) yesterday, so I wanted to share this one. Found in the greenhouses of the botanical gardens in Bonn. If anyone can help ID, that would be amazing! :D

One of common nonparasitic #leech species of Central Europe - Erpobdella nigricollis - from dead branch of Elbe river. Dark spot behind eyes are pigmented supraoesophageal ganglia. #meiofauna #zoology #invertebrates
Prostoma [most likely graecense] - freshwater #nemerteans from weekend fieldwork session. Biggest nemerteans which we ever found. Super annoying size - too big for microscope, too small for macro photo. Noodles will be examined histologicaly in following weeks. #zoology #meiofauna

Shining a light on tiny, solar-powered animals

Animals and plants need energy. Some animals get energy by eating other animals, and many plants harvest the energy in sunlight through photosynthesis. However, in the ocean, there exists a remarkable group of small, worm-like animals called acoels that do both; some acoels form relationships (symbiosis) with single-celled, photosynthetic microalgae.
