“Di sicuro è una delle prestazioni migliori della mia carriera“, così a caldo Matteo Berrettini dopo aver travolto con un doppio 6-0 il russo Daniil Medvedev al secondo turno del Masters 1000 di Montecarlo. “Credo di aver sbagliato solo tre colpi e per di più contro un giocatore fastidioso come Daniil”, le parole del tennista romano, oggi numero 90 del ranking Atp”.
Una partita non semplice da un punto di vista mentale. Perché Berrettini ha dovuto tenere alta la concentrazione, nonostante lo show di Medvedev dall’altra parte tra lamentele, racchette spaccate e un nervosismo percepibile anche a distanza. “Le mie armi hanno funzionato e dopo il primo game in cui ho annullato due palle break ho sentito che stavo giocando sempre meglio. Non mi aspettavo di vincere cosi, è ovvio, non accade spesso ma al tempo stesso ho mantenuto alta la mia concentrazione di spingere sempre, senza pensare a cosa accadeva di là perché so che il tennis è uno sport strano e così ho continuato a spingere e ho conseguito questa vittoria”.

Poi da lì non c’è mai più stata una partita: un dominio dell’italiano, complici anche tantissimi errori dell’avversario. “C’era il rischio di perdere la concentrazione e sapevo che tutto poteva cambiare nel giro di un paio di punti. Spero sempre di fare una buona corsa nei tornei, ma la realtà è che ho bisogno di partite come queste, ho bisogno di vincere, di perdere e di digerire le sconfitte. Mi servono tempo e fiducia, cose che si costruiscono durante gli allenamenti e spero che il momento di vivere un buon torneo arrivi molto presto”, ha concluso Berrettini.

It was a mentally challenging match. Berrettini had to maintain his concentration, despite Medvedev’s show on the other side of the net filled with complaints, broken rackets, and perceptible nervousness, even from a distance. “My weapons worked and after the first game, in which I saved two break points, I felt like I was playing better and better. I didn’t expect to win like that, of course, it doesn’t happen often, but at the same time I kept my concentration high, always pushing, without thinking about what was happening over there because I know that tennis is a strange sport and so I kept pushing and achieved this victory.”
A complicated start, with Berrettini saving two break points. Then there was never a match: an Italian dominance, aided by many errors from the opponent. “There was the risk of losing concentration and I knew that everything could change in just a couple of points. I always hope to have a good run in tournaments, but the reality is that I need matches like these, I need to win, lose, and digest defeats. I need time and confidence, things that are built during training, and I hope that the opportunity to have a good tournament arrives very soon,” Berrettini concluded.
