Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in her late 30s, Sandra Demontigny pushed Quebec to allow advanced requests for MAID. While Quebec has become a leader internationally for the practice over the past decade, she hopes others keep up the fight in the rest of Canada.
Medical assistance in dying (MAID) became legal in Canada in 2016. Since then, more than 60,000 people have died with MAID. Kelley Korbin writes for Chatelaine Magazine about the laws around it, and what it was like to support her father through MAID after he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2022.

Andrew Lawton (@AndrewLawton): "I almost died by suicide fifteen years ago while battling depression. If the expansion of MAID coming into force in 2027 were in place then, I'd likely be dead right now. Today, I'm launching the #IGotBetter campaign to keep hope alive for people living with mental illness." | nitter

“Some patients are being euthanized while suffering from untreated mental illnesses & addictions. They’re more likely to come from poor areas & be suffering from inadequate housing, lack of social supports & simple loneliness”
This is why disabled people are screaming about MAiD in Canada. It’s a slippery slope - and we’ve slid too far down.
Many patients WANT to live and simply can’t access the medical care or social supports they need to survive.
Wait times for specialists can be 12-18 months (or longer) but you can be approved to die in three. An eye opening article:

Federal Health Minister Mark Holland says Ottawa will not be contesting Quebec's law to allow advance requests for assisted dying, also known as MAID, as it begins Canada-wide consultations on making changes to the Criminal Code.
