MAID in Delaware 🙏

Delaware’s medical end-of-life option should soon come online.

“Signed into law this past spring, the Ron Silverio/Heather Block End of Life Options Law allows terminally ill patients who have six months or fewer to live the choice to request and receive medication that will “end the individual’s life in a humane and dignified manner,” according to the law’s text. Individuals are unable to qualify based on age or disability.”

MAID data shows no ‘slippery slope’

“As we approach a decade since #MedicalAidInDying legislation was first introduced in #Delaware, residents and lawmakers alike should be well versed on how this established #EndOfLife health care option works in the United States.

Sadly, we are still hearing arguments based on fear (at best) and lies (at worst), perpetuated in legislative hearings.”

Our Podcast on Medical Aid in Dying (MAID)

HB140, End of Life Options, just passed in the #Delaware House and now has to go before the Senate and get the Governor's signature.

Rather than changing minds, Dr Varipapa switches the conversation to the important ethical concept of patient autonomy and choice as well as the primary concepts of MAID. Dr Vest provides a counterpoint to MAID.

Those who oppose MAID have concerns about the ‘slippery slope’, something which has not been demonstrated in Oregon or the other 10 states that permit MAID.

Watched the 1st in a 6 part #PBS docu-series called #TakeMeOutFeetFirst which examines the lives & decisions of the terminally ill in choosing to take their own lives in states where it is legal to do so.

The 1st episode is about a couple who lived in Marin who chose the same route at different times -- the wife passing before the husband -- but for the same reason -- to avoid the pain & suffering that could only lead to death as a result of cancer.

The show was filmed & produced by one of their daughters which made it even more sobering.

FWIW, I hope to be able to have the choice to go out in the same way. The only requirement being that I have to have a terminal illness to qualify.
Not loving that idea but we all gotta go sometime & I'd like to be able to pick & choose when that time will be.

Wouldn't you? 🤔
