This article is very strange. When my partner received her surgery and radiation treatment for breast cancer, she had no out of pocket expenses. In the public system under Medicare, surgery, radiation, ongoing aftercare, and travel and accommodation in Canberra away from our rural location were all covered. Her ongoing treatment is covered under the PBS and Medicare. In talking to friends who have used the private system, their treatment and advice received have been different and arguably not as good.
It reads to us as if for breast cancer treatment - surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, medications, any needed travel - choosing the public system is the better choice.
My partner strongly recommends that people with breast cancer use Breast Cancer Network Australia - https://bcna.org.au/ - as a first point of call for reliable information on treatment choices. The Cancer Council also has good information.
