The former Mechanics' Institute on Bath Street in Glasgow. The Mechanics' Institutes were a movement which aimed to provide a way for working men to expand their education that was born out of a lecture given by George Birkbeck at the Andersonian Institute in Glasgow in 1804. The first Mechanics' Institute was created in Edinburgh in 1821 and the end of the 19th Century there were over 9,000 of them around the world.
