McPherson designed their abomination to reduce weight and number of parts during design, relying on the frame's attachment points (see Ford's typical arch off the frame to attach shocks/struts).
When that was added to the frameless body, the ONLY thing taking the impact of the struts us the thin 2-3mm Aluminum shell of the body.
