The United States Conference of Mayors #USCM, a non-partisan org that represents #mayors of at least 1,400 cities, said in a statement it hopes federal officials will work on "a partnership – not a #takeover" in #Washington.

"Ultimately, the best public safety outcomes are delivered by local police departments & local officials, who know the communities. America’s mayors never see takeovers by other levels of government as a tactic that has any track record of producing results," it read.

Britain is about to start fighting over fracking again

Nigel Farage’s Reform UK think there’s hundreds of billions of pounds worth of shale gas ripe for exploiting. But are they ready for the fracking backlash?

Europe must choose: Invest in fear or in the future

Ramping up military budgets in the face of flatlining social spending is a risky trade-off.

“What” people and “how” people: Reformers see things that could be done better. But for change, reformers must work with insiders because they know how to make changes succeed. The Guiding Hand a Neophyte Mayor Needs

New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee has idealism and charisma. If he wins, he’ll need someone with a deep understanding of how a city works to translate passion into governance. There’s an obvious candidate.

@atlgaytheist Thank you for the insight. So much irony in that the targets of this policy are the public that the policy proclaims to protect.

What could be a framework to address equitable housing (#rent-to-own?), depression (#wellness centers?), medical access (#universalhealthcare ?)? How about walkable/rollable communities and living #wages?

Also, research from #mayors for Guaranteed Income shows that 18 months of #UBI helps people secure housing, employment, and stability. See more at: https://static1.squarespace.com/static/60ae8e339f75051fd95f792e/t/67649772ddc88c5f2dc1aeba/1734645619972/MGI_End+of+Year+Report_2024_Final.pdf

The Nation makes recommendations of governance to candidate Mamdani examining recent successes and pitfalls for New York mayors. Some of these would be useful for progressive mayoral candidates here in Seattle.

Running New York City is brutal. But if he wins in November, there are key lessons from past mayors that Mamdani should learn from.

How do you judge a mayor’s performance? How he or she delivered on promises is one way. How great the ambitions were is another. How the mayor went about the job could be included. Results good or bad would certainly be part. As Eric Adams limps toward his last days as mayor of NYC, it’s time to think about how we should do … his damage assessment. https://www.thecity.nyc/2025/07/09/adams-campaign-matching-funds-uzbekistan/ #mayors
Eric Adams’ Chances of Getting Public Campaign Matching Funds Just Got Worse

The New York City Campaign Finance Board is now looking into donations connected to an alleged Uzbekistani agent and continues to reject the mayor’s appeals for matching funds.

“I don’t know what that means”: Not many #mayors give blunt answers to reporters’ questions, even the silly ones. But D.C. Mayor Bowser may be on to something. She doesn’t champion too many bad ideas (OK, maybe that #NFL stadium), but she also doesn’t promise what she can’t deliver. Her straightforward manner may explain why she has been in office for 10 years … and counting. https://www.washingtonian.com/2025/07/08/interview-dc-mayor-muriel-bowser-her-blm-plaza-decision/
