Over the last 14 hours, some areas received more than 20 inches of rain (Kula) and wind gusts more than 70 mph (Kaunakakai).

Maui is one of my favorite places on Earth. Driving through the destruction a year ago was so overwhelming I pulled over and broke down in tears. It felt like I’d lost a part of my soul. It still does.

The devastation is just so visible now, makes me so sad. So many people’s homes and businesses just gone and I imagine the rebuild will take years. Not just because of the number of buildings destroyed–over 2,000–but also because the labor and supplies constraints for a small island. Maui population is what, 60-70,000?
But they are ohana and we will be with them.
