The great Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o has died.
I didn't know much about him other than his writing. I came across "Petals of Blood" in a second hand book shop back in the 90s. It's one of those novels you don't forget reading.
He was a champion of African literature in African languages. I can see where he was coming from but I can also see why writers such as Chinua Achebe choose to write in English - to reach a wider readership in Africa as well as beyond.
Ngũgĩ seems to have been a complex character. Hard to read about him abusing his wife (according to the son), especially just after reading about her being raped by men targeting Ngũgĩ (presumably for his uncompromising political views).

Israel tried to operate settler colonialism on the pattern of earlier European settler colonialisms established around the world. That effort linked to me indirectly in a remarkably personal way. Without grasping why, I chose to participate in a program for Harvard and Radcliffe undergraduates that took 20 of us to East Africa in the early 1960s as volunteers for a summer of teaching. I began to learn there what settler colonialism meant. Further studies grew into my doctoral dissertation later at Yale based on research in the records of London’s Colonial Office and the British Museum. My resulting book, The Economics of Colonialism: Britain and Kenya, 1870–1930 (New Haven, Yale University Press, 1974), tried to analyze Kenya’s settler colonialist economy.

Recommended #documentary film.
Between 1952 and 1960, Britain fought a vicious war in Kenya against the anticolonial Mau Mau movement. It was an exceptionally bloody conflict, with atrocities committed on both sides. For decades, many of the worst abuses by British colonial forces were kept hidden. Piecing together survivor testimonies and expert analysis from British and Kenyan historians, this film tells a complete and detailed story for the first time of how Britain was involved in systemic torture – including accounts of murders, rapes and forced castrations.
A Very British Way of Torture is a film by Ed McGown and produced by Rob Newman.

"In 2011, the world learned of the secret British policy called #OperationLegacy that was implemented in the 1950s. The goal of this policy was to remove incriminating documents from former colonies in the months before each one became politically independent.
"Documents that might embarrass or damage the British government, police and military were either secretly removed or destroyed."
