Daring to question city hall’s new-car habit

During the HRM’s final budget preseason meeting, on December 12, councillor Trish Purdy caught a lot of stick. Tuesday’s budget meeting was the Capital Updates and Advance Tenders meeting.

"A few hours later you’re walking your dog. Your neighbour is driving towards you in his dark red truck. You wave. You don’t know if he waves back. You’re 5’10” and your eyes are level with the GMC logo on the front grill. He is slowly drifting towards you. You think you see the soft glow of your distracted death on his face". #MattStickland makes a story about a speed hump a piece of art!

Sprawl is still a problem for Halifax, 20 years after it was flagged as an urgent issue

The Community Planning and Economic Development Standing Committee met on Thursday, Nov. 16, and the only thing they did of consequence was vote on a motion allowing construction companies to pour concrete an additional hour and a half until 9:30 pm. This will go to council for final approval.

Nova Scotians are being governed very badly when it comes to climate

In the past few years it seems like tragedy has piled on Nova Scotia, which has only been compounded by recent—likely now normal—climate changed weather. In the fires of Tantallon, the flaws and vulnerabilities of suburban sprawl were on full display:

"The main takeaway: Global warming is projected to break the 1.5 C threshold for the first time in 2027. Before that time, we need to fundamentally change our consumption habits and patterns to prevent climate change. Even if that work started today, your city government couldn’t even build a bike lane in time. Write to your councillor, you’re in danger".

"Perhaps the city could take a holistic look at transportation and create a plan that integrates all modes of mobility.... Can you even imagine how nice it would be to live in a city that had some sort of Integrated Mobility Plan that would solve this problem?"

Everything you need to know about HRM council’s May 9 meeting

Councillor Trish Purdy demonstrated some ruthless political chops at Tuesday’s HRM council meeting. Purdy has a habit of asking questions that are already answered in the reports given to council prior to meetings.

"Free parking is the real tragedy of the commons. In a tangible way, we have given up free communal spaces in exchange for free individual spaces. The pattern of making this trade over and over again is what is killing this planet, and even though our politicians talk a big game, they never put their money where their mouth is".

Confused council passes HRM budget with climate tax and carbon subsidies

Weird meeting of HRM council this week, and not just because councillors had to do three meetings in one. The politically weird bit of Tuesday’s meeting is the fact that councillors are unwilling to commit to the actions that will enable their stated goals.
