3/5: This middle volume of Keanu Reeves', Matt Kindt's, Ron Garney's and Bill Crabtree's BRZRKR holds few surprises, having read the first. The coolness of the central premise remains—an ancient immortal warrior is working for the US government, in exchange for US scientists researching a way that he can become mortal. The artwork is dynamic, expressive, stylish, and a model of narrative clarity. The writing is technically slick, if somewhat formulaic, with every scene carefully crafted to unfold a bit more character development with each narrative beat. I’m reading the first 3 volumes of this by way of preparation for China Miéville’s(!) forthcoming contribution to the IP. Pretty good writing for a Hollywood actor, I thought, and brilliant art, but basically pretty pedestrian.

Unsterbliche Agenten, Gedankenkontrolle, eine mysteriöse Gruppenamnesie im Flugzeug – Matt Kindt bedient sich in Mind MGMT aus dem Werkzeugkasten der Parawissenschaften, zur guten Unterhaltung der Leser*innen. Die Gründungsgeschichte der MGMT wird in die Zeit des Ersten Weltkriegs datiert. Damals habe der Gauner Leopold Lojka andere von seinen magischen Fähigkeiten überzeugen können – und hätte mit diesen beinahe das Attentat auf den österreichischen Kronprinzen verhindert, das wiederum den Ersten Weltkrieg auslöste. Daraufhin wurde mit dem „Mind MGMT“ eine Geheimorganisation gegründet, deren Ziel darin besteht, Personen mit besonderen geistigen Fähigkeiten zu Agenten auszubilden. Mit „besonderen geistigen Fähigkeiten“ sind aber nicht Speedcuber, Eckenrechner oder Sudoku-Champs gemeint, sondern Menschen wie Duncan Jones aka „Der Futurist“. Seine Gabe besteht darin, die Gedanken der Menschen in seiner Umgebung wahrzunehmen und so zu verdichten, dass er die zukünftigen Ereignisse schon vorher kennt.
