In reference to the third "Constitutional question" in the 2026 Alberta referendum [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Alberta_referendum]:

That is the "I want to divorce you, but I still want to live in your house, sleep with you regularly, and own half your stuff" amendment. ... — #MattGurney

A mixed F-35/Gripen fighter jet fleet will fail us in every way

I've been thinking, based largely off comments by #MattGurney, that a mixed fleet would be the right policy for Canada. It is thus important to read the opposing view.

Richard Shimooka: A mixed F-35/Gripen fleet will fail us in every way

The Gripen is less capable, more expensive and still reliant on U.S. production

#MattGurney is optimistic about the new plans for increased defence spending:

"I’ve had a chance to actually look at some of the details of what was announced today for Canada’s defence. Overall, I am very supportive of everything that’s been announced. There are some caveats. Or at least notes."

"So there we have it. Carney's conundrum. The only way to buy him as a change agent is to accept one of two things, neither of which has much evidence in favour of it — that he is spectacularly competent, or that he's just a pretty normal guy learning the ropes in a new job, and that job just happens to be leading a thoroughly broken party that could have saved itself, but didn't."

Matt Gurney: Carney's change conundrum

The Liberals have heartily embraced Carney as their change agent, but have no explanation for why they tolerated, or championed, what apparently needed changing.

Regarding https://cosocial.ca/@mpjgregoire/114394351752261124 , here's #MattGurney:

"Nah. Carney tried to spin the call as proof that he was tougher than Trudeau. A man Trump wouldn't mess with. A clear attempt to signal that he was a stronger PM than Trudeau was, and someone better able to handle Trump. That's why getting him to answer today was so agonizing."

Here's a 33 second clip of Mr. Carney being questioned about the matter. Judge for yourself his honesty. https://x.com/DrJacobsRad/status/1915464296391123188 [Edited to add the link to the clip on Twitter.] 2/2 #CanPol #cdnpoli #elxn45

So! An extra month...

The question now, of course, is what we do with those 30 days. And I have a proposal that's going to sound bizarre, but is rooted firmly in history. U.S. presidential history, somewhat ironically.

We should, in a lot of ways, pretend the 30-day extension didn't happen. Ignore it. And accept Trump's announcement of tariffs.

Matt Gurney: Stay scared shitless, Canada

Let's borrow a strategy from JFK to deal with Trump: Ignore the new reprieve. Accept the earlier threat.
