Is it just me, or is it weird as hell how IG turned into this place where people only post to their story… and when they finally drop something on their feed, they delete it a few days later? Like bro… you’ve had that account since 2015 and you’re rotating the same four pics like it's a limited edition drop. What is going on with IG culture right now?

Just occurred to me that it's been YEARS since I've used anything other that Mastodon as a "social media".

What have I learned? My life is measurably better without the attention seeking cycle and Mastodon communities are what we hoped the web would always be.

So if you're on the fence? Don't be. You won't miss it. Even Aunt Edna will eventually text or send an email if it really matters. In the meantime, let her keep her memes to herself.

One concern I have with Mastodon + federation is that your instance can shut down. Just in my limited view, I've been aware of a few instances shut down that affected people I follow.

People gleefully proclaim that you can transfer your followers to your new account. Neat, but what about all the toots? Unless something has changed, they all disappear. I have a big problem with that. A huge part of why I do micro-blogging is I want that history.

I realize that there are reasons that Mastodon doesn't allow #QuoteTooting the way that Twitter has #QuoteTweeting.

That said, even after 9 months of using Mastodon almost exclusively, I still catch myself trying to quote toot something only to remember that (essentially) I can't.

I get that search on Mastodon is a topic that many people have Big Opinions on, and I don't want to go there. However, I just discovered / realized I can't even search my own Toots. I feel like this is a big let-down.

One of my main use cases for Twitter/Mastodon is as a journal. Do I have to meticulously tag every single Toot to have any chance to recall what I've written about a topic?
