Getting lots of new followers today! Some of that may be because you guys are seeing my posts on #Twitter (Sorry, not Twitter, "X" 🙄). Glad you decided to follow me here - #WelcomeToMastodon! This place may seem a little confusing at first, but I think you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. Just a couple important things to keep in mind: - There's no algorithm here. You can't always see who follows whom. You can't see other people's likes. That's not how discovery works here. - Directly search for people you want to find. Avoid accounts with stuff like "bird.makeup" in the name; they're not real and are just automated mirrors of Twitter accounts, often without the account holder's consent. - Look at the "Explore" page. Look at "Live Feeds" and check out "Local," "Remote," and "All" - you'll see lots of content there and find people to follow that way! - Remember that you can follow hashtags here just like you follow users! - On that note, tag your stuff with hashtags. They're your best friend here when it comes to discoverability. - Fill out your profile (*especially* with a profile picture) as quickly as possible so your posts draw people's eyes. - Make an #Introduction post so people know about you! (You can pin it, too!) - Use content warnings liberally! Unlike on Twitter, you are *never* going to be penalized by an algorithm here for posting sensitive/NSFW content or links. Just make sure you follow the rules of your instance! If in doubt, put a CW on it. It's not going to affect your visibility in people's timelines! If there's something you're not sure about, ask someone! Have a great time here - I think you'll find this place a breath of fresh air compared to Twitter!

RFK Jr. attempts to walk back controversial remarks that COVID-19 was ‘ethnically targeted’

Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. attempted to walk back his controversial remarks suggesting that COVID-19 was “ethnically targeted” to spare Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people on Saturday. Kennedy, who is a prominent anti-vaccine activist, said at a press event on Tuesday night that COVID-19 was “ethnically targeted” to attack “certain races disproportionately.”  “There…

#MastodonHashTags are #MastodonSearch
It's not a one-off opt-in, it's a deliberate decision every time.
If you want more engagement, do it. If you don't, don't. The choice is there, and for whatever reason, most people don't.
It's one of the reasons that Mastodon is more like chatting with friends than the yelling at strangers that Twitter so often is.

@markwyner
I found a practical use for posting on mastodon with the help of ChatGPT.

So, in ChatGPT I asked the simple question

What camelcase formatted hashtags should I use for the following mastodon post ? "I was reading an article about chatGPT and how it would automate the indexing of notes. So, why not get chatGPT to automatically create the mastodon hashtags?"

And I get the following hashtags :

#ChatGPT #AutomatedIndexing #Notes #MastodonHashtags

@meltedcheese In the brief time I've been here, I've seen lots of hashtags in my feeds. Hashtags being important doesn't mean that you should randomly tag all kinds of words like you did here. This will just clutter the search results when people do use hashtags to search for value. Instead, pick one or two or three that truly describe your post. (And keep in mind that many posts here are of a more personal nature and don't need to be searchable.)
