First up is Anatahan (1953), directed by Josef von Sternberg, his last film, starring Akemi Negishi, Tadashi Suganuma, Kisaburō Sawamura, and Shōji Nakayama. Based on a true story of Japanese holdouts on an island after WWII.

Second, Thérèse Raquin (1980), a miniseries directed by Simon Langton, starring Brian Cox, Emily Washbourne, Kate Nelligan, Alan Rickman, and many other classic British actors. It's based on an Emile Zola story of the same name.

Since today is the anniversary of the Titanic sinking, it is also the day on which Downton Abbey begins.

The newspaper arrives, is pressed (!) and taken upstairs, where the family learns over breakfast of the tragedy and the deaths at sea of the two male heirs to Downton Abbey. That set the stage for everything that followed.
