Just finished Locked In by John Pfaff. A sharp analysis of how prosecutors drive mass incarceration. I think Pfaff underestimates how skewed crime stats are from 1960 & misses the broadest economic costs of imprisonment — but his work is essential. Worth reading for anyone serious about reform.

The Oregon Department of Corrections has moved to fire three corrections officers at the state’s largest prison who sent racist, antisemitic, homophobic and sexist texts, videos and images on a group thread with other members of the prison’s tactical team, records show.

The Snake River Correctional Institution employees, Thomas White and brothers Steven and Samuel Main, were placed on paid leave in December 2023 and continue to collect their salaries.

Things here in the #US just keep getting darker and darker, but I still have hope. The worst excesses of Trumpism are only possible because of #Trump 's personality cult. When he dies (and it won't be long now), his cult will die with him. And it will happen FAST. We've already seen how volatile #MAGA groups are even with their fetish alive. They'll rip themselves apart trying to claim his crown once he's gone.

Besides that, I still believe that Americans favor democracy, and will demand it of their leaders going forward. They were willing to sacrifice it for Trump, but they will not give others the same allowance. It'll be a generation before another figure like him appears.

Until the right's post-MAGA chaos settles, there will be a moment of opportunity for progressives to heal some of the damage Trump has done. Whether they will actually take advantage of it, rather than just squander it like they usually do, remains to be seen. We are still suffering from #Reagan 's legacy, and that was 40 years ago. We still haven't closed #Gitmo or ended #MassIncarceration .

There is a lot left to fight for, and these goals are achievable.

Oregon Senate Bill 1007 would have made it easier for wrongfully convicted people in the state to seek compensation for their years incarcerated, but was among the bills that floundered in the legislative session even though it had nearly universal bipartisan support.

Much of that floundering was due to an uncertain budget picture that left even top priorities for supermajority Democrats, such as a massive transportation package, without a path forward.
