Tonight's movie was Triple Threat (2019).

Triple Threat is a forgettable story with a weak central motivation for the antagonists. But really, I didn't watch the movie for the story -- though it was so distressingly bad that it detracted from the excellent martial arts sequences.

Silly and not very thoughtful about guns in the movie -- why go into a close combat situation with just a heavy machine gun or a grenade launcher? Pretty stupid and really detracts from us believing these people are trained as special forces.

All the martial artists are great in the movie -- and this movie has a long list: Iko Uwais, Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen Hu, Michael Jai White, Michael Bisping, JeeJa Yanin and Scott Adkins.

Scott Adkins is okay as the lead antagonist but we don't get to see him fight until the third reel of the movie which is unfortunate because the man can really fight. I like Adkins better in protagonist roles, but he's fine in this movie.

How many Talking Villains Moments could there be in one movie? Apparently a lot.

Triple Threat is ultimately forgettable and the pacing is slow. Twice, one of the characters says what the audeince must have been thinking, "Talk, talk, talk. No more talk."

Rated 4 out of 10.

Streamed on Tubi.

Today’s delicious Van Damme double feature: Kickboxer, a perfect appetizer, and Bloodsport, a perfect main course.

Both filled with martial arts goodness, Paul Hertzog’s synth-heavy tracks, and Stan Bush’s raspy songs – not to mention training montages with mustached masters, lots of splits, and nasty oriental opponents.

Kickboxer is already good, but Bloodsport is great – it’s my favorite JCVD flick and my favorite martial arts movie, improving on Kickboxer in every aspect: a better story, better action, better characters, better production values, a better theme song, and overall better music.
