Tonight's movie was Triple Threat (2019).

Triple Threat is a forgettable story with a weak central motivation for the antagonists. But really, I didn't watch the movie for the story -- though it was so distressingly bad that it detracted from the excellent martial arts sequences.

Silly and not very thoughtful about guns in the movie -- why go into a close combat situation with just a heavy machine gun or a grenade launcher? Pretty stupid and really detracts from us believing these people are trained as special forces.

All the martial artists are great in the movie -- and this movie has a long list: Iko Uwais, Tony Jaa, Tiger Chen Hu, Michael Jai White, Michael Bisping, JeeJa Yanin and Scott Adkins.

Scott Adkins is okay as the lead antagonist but we don't get to see him fight until the third reel of the movie which is unfortunate because the man can really fight. I like Adkins better in protagonist roles, but he's fine in this movie.

How many Talking Villains Moments could there be in one movie? Apparently a lot.

Triple Threat is ultimately forgettable and the pacing is slow. Twice, one of the characters says what the audeince must have been thinking, "Talk, talk, talk. No more talk."

Rated 4 out of 10.

Streamed on Tubi.

Early-’90s action movies really said “logic is optional, stereotypes are mandatory.” Deadly Target and Showdown in Little Tokyo are less buddy-cop thrillers than accidental documentaries about Hollywood’s brain on martial arts, cocaine, and vibes. Glorious, baffling nonsense.

The Archaeology of Action Trash: Narrative Breakdown, Ethnic Cluelessness, and Queer Subversion in Deadly Target and Showdown in Little Tokyo

Deadly Target (1994) goes out of its way to make sure all the good guys are Caucasian and all the villains are Chinese (except a redshirt uniformed cop and the hero’s romantic interest). Even Charl…

“There is no situation you cannot turn to your advantage.” Unless you're in Redbelt, where Mamet’s stoic fighter navigates a morally rigged system with only dialogue and discipline. A minimalist martial arts parable from cinema’s tersest tactician.

Verbal Jiu-Jitsu: Narrative Austerity in Mamet’s Redbelt

Redbelt (2008) may not be David Mamet’s best, but it is an intriguing showcase of his sharpest traits and, more importantly, demonstrates that a gifted filmmaker can elevate any genre. Mamet doesn’…
