Marsmission: Härtetest für die Suche nach Leben
Ab 2030 soll der ESA-Rover Rosalind Franklin auf dem Mars nach Überresten von Leben suchen. Das MPS schickt ein Messinstrument mit auf die Reise. Das Instrument bestimmt unter anderem eine entscheidende Eigenschaft organischer Moleküle: ihre Chiralität. Sie verrät, ob die Moleküle je Teil eines lebenden Organismus waren. Als Vorbereitung haben Forschende nun erstmals nach diesem Prinzip Meteoritenproben erfolgreich auf zwei besonders aussagekräftige chemische Verbindungen untersucht. Die Messungen finden zudem Hinweise darauf, dass Meteorite beim Sturzflug durch die Erdatmosphäre Reste fossiler Brennstoffe „einsammeln“.
