Vanessa cardui (fam. Nymphalidae)

[ES] Ayer subí con mucha ilusión a la montaña palentina con la intención de fotografiar especies que no es posible encontrar en Cáceres y me encontré con que, para mi sorpresa, hacía mucho calor y, además, las mariposas no estaban nada colaborativas. No conseguí una foto decente en toda la mañana, pero me lo pasé muy bien persiguiendo bichos por los praos.

[EN] Yesterday I went to the mountains of Palencia. My aim was taking photos of species that are not present in Cáceres, but, surprisingly, the weather was so warm and the butterflies didn't want to pose for me even for a second. I didn't get a decent photo in the whole morning. But I had fun pursuing bugs in the grassfields.

Zygaena sp. (fam. Zygaenidae)


[ES] Subo la foto porque es la primera Zygaena que logro fotografiar este año y tenía muchas ganas, pero la verdad es que es malísima. No me dejó hacerle más que cuatro fotografías y a cada cual peor. Pero ahí está.
La división de los lepidópteros en "mariposas" y "polillas" es artificial y carece de base científica, prueba de ello es esta familia de polillas de hábitos diurnos, coloración vistosa y antenas engrosadas hacia el final. Su coloración tan llamativa ("aposemática") indica que son tóxicas, pues son capaces de sintetizar cianuro.

Edición: Cambio la identificación porque la especie que había puesto no está presente en la mitad suroccidental de la península.

[EN] I know the photo is really bad, but this is the first Zygaena I get to photograph this year and I feel excited about that. This is a moth that flies during the day, shows bright colours and whose antennae swell at the end. So... is this a moth or a butterfly?
Its bright colours are a warning about its toxicity (this is called aposematism) because they are able to synthetize cyanide.

Charaxes jasius (fam. Nymphalidae)

[ES] Esta enorme mariposa, que con esa coloración tan llamativa parece tropical, en realidad es mediterránea. Otra cosa que tiene en común con las mariposas tropicales es que los imagos se alimentan de jugos de frutas fermentadas en lugar de libar néctar; también les gusta mucho libar sales minerales del suelo e incluso jugos de cadáveres. Las larvas se alimentan de hojas de madroño, muy abundante por aquí. Es una especie bivoltina: presenta dos generaciones al año; los imagos de la primera vuelan en mayo-junio y los de la segunda en septiembre-octubre.
Se distribuye por el sur de la península Ibérica, ascendiendo hasta Galicia por el atlántico, y por la costas de todos los países al norte y al sur del Mediterráneo.

[EN] Despite this huge butterfly looks like a tropical species, it is mediterranean. And, like the tropical species, it feeds on fermenting fruits. They also like to sip mineral salts from the soil and even juices from dead animals. Larvae feed on leaves of Arbutus unedo ("madroño"). Adults can be seen twice a year: first generation in May and second in September.
It is distributed in the South of Iberian Peninsula, reaching Galicia in the atlantic coast, and in the coasts of both northern and southern mediterranean countries.

Melitaea deione (fam. Nymphalidae). Hembra/Female.

[ES] Se dedicó a dar vueltas sin parar sobre la flor mientras está libando y yo venga a enfocar y reencuadrar. Esta es la mejor foto que pude conseguir. Estaba sobre una flor de Jasione, pero la tapa por completo; una pena, porque los colores de la flor y la mariposa se complementan bien.

[EN] It kept spinning round on the flower while I was trying to focus and recompose the photo. That's the best photo I could get. It was on a Jasione's flower, but the flower is hidden by the butterfly. That's a pity, because the colours of the butterfly and the flower matched well.

Maniola jurtina (fam. Nymphalidae)

[ES] Por más fotos que la hacía, siempre veía el ojo desenfocado, hasta que saqué una con la máxima ampliación que permite mi objetivo y descubrí que son las manchas difusas que tiene en el ojo las que hacen que parezca desenfocado. Estaba metida entre la hierba y este es el mejor encuadre que pude conseguir.

[EN] I took a lot of photos because I was seeing the eye blurred in all of them, so I took one more at the maximum magnification my lens allow and I discovered that the spots on its eye are just blurred. It was hidden in the grass, so this is the best composition I could get.
