Marion Brown - Once Upon a Time

Ended the week and welcomed the weekend with Gesprächsfetzen by Marion Brown / Gunter Hampel, released on Calig in 1968

Matthew Wright wrote for Jazz Journal:

"...There’s a pattern here of calm beginnings, sometimes just alto and vibes, feeling their way round each other, joined by other instruments which, after Ambrose Jackson’s trumpet clarion call on Gesprächsfetzen, build to intensity, Steve McCall pushing menacingly and urgently. Likewise, ethereal vibes and percussion interrupt the ongoing storm on Tomorrow Is The Beginning...

...An album of contrasts, exploring the divergence, variation and spontaneity within free jazz at the time."

Fire Music is a studio album by jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp released on Impulse! Records in 1965. "Malcolm, Malcolm Semper Malcolm" is dedicated to Malcolm X, whilst "Los Olvidados" is a homage to the 1950 film of the same name. Featured musicians include trumpeter Ted Curson, trombonist Joe Orange, alto saxophonist Marion Brown, bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Joe Chambers.

Writing for All About Jazz, Robert Gilbert called Fire Music "an often-fascinating album, rich in compositional and improvisational prowess", and commented: "Shepp puts together a record that is both challenging and accessible to most listeners... Fire Music is an album that belongs in any serious jazz fan’s collection." - Wikipedia

Marion Brown Quartet is an album by American saxophonist Marion Brown, his debut as a leader. It was recorded in November 1965 in New York City, and was released in 1966 on the ESP-Disk label. The album features Brown on alto saxophone, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Bennie Maupin on tenor saxophone, Reggie Johnson and Ronnie Boykins on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums.

Writing for Point of Departure, David Grundy described Brown as having a sound that "tended towards the abstrusely melodic, with a marked lyrical tendency offset by an astringent bite that could peel the paint off any wall", ...Ali's drums function like sparklers: they crackle and glow; Brown smears and drags high notes around careful, angular melodic figures, while Shorter is at first loud and declarative, before simmering to buzzing smears, as if someone were wailing with their hand over their mouth."

Marion Brown - "Vista" (1975)

Another new reissue on Impulse! Records. Somehow I never got around to hearing this before. It's an absolute classic of the Impulse catalog, and a terrific recording.

Features several great musicians, including #MarionBrown #AnthonyDavis #StanleyCrowell #EdBlackwell #ReggieWorkman and none other than #HaroldBudd on celesta and gong. They play one of Budd's songs too.
