One of the U.S.βs longest standing pieces of environmental legislation, credited with helping save rare whales from extinction, is the subject of an effort for cutbacks from Republican lawmakers who now feel they have the political will to do so. The Marine Mammal Protection Act, enacted 1972, protects whales, seals, polar bears and other sea animals, and it places restrictions on commercial fishermen and shippers. The legislation has long been a target of conservatives and industry members who now seek to remove key pieces of it. A GOP-led bill is in the works to do just that. Conservation groups adamantly oppose the changes and say they will erase years of hard won gains for jeopardized species.
END ALL CAPTURES OF DOLPHINS FOR PUBLIC DISPLAY IN U.S. TERRITORIAL WATERS
There has not been a dolphin capture for public display in U.S. Territorial waters since 1993 due to the #MarineMammalProtectionAct. It's incredibly difficult for an #aquarium to obtain permits to capture #dolphins humanely, but unfortunately it is still not considered illegal. We need an amendment of the MMPA to include a clause that will end the #capture of dolphins for public display.

it is far removed from their natural #environment. Dolphins kept in captivity are known to suffer from stress-related health issues and illnesses. Confining these animals to lives in tanks is inhumane and selfish.
Join us in asking Members of Congress to amend the #MarineMammalProtectionAct to stop any imports or exports of dolphins across U.S. Borders.
