Just days ago, Brazil’s Supreme Court delivered a historic verdict: former congressman João Francisco Inácio Brazão (Chiquinho) and his brother Domingos Inácio Brazão were unanimously convicted and sentenced to over 76 years in prison each for ordering the 2018 assassination of Marielle Franco and her driver, Anderson Gomes.
Marielle, a fearless Black, feminist councilwoman and human rights defender, was targeted because she boldly challenged land-grabbing schemes tied to militia interests controlled by the Brazão brothers. As Justice Alexandre de Moraes stated from the bench, she “dared” to fight operations under their influence—hindering legislation that would have benefited their criminal networks.
This ruling exposes the deep, entrenched ties between politics, militias, and corruption in Rio, sending a clear message that such impunity will no longer be tolerated. Marielle’s case remains a chilling symbol of how far these connections reach—even into the highest levels of public office.
For years, the cry “Quem mandou matar Marielle?” echoed in streets, on banners, and in graffiti worldwide. Today, we finally have answers, and justice has taken a monumental step forward.
Marielle’s fight for justice, equality, and the rights of the favelas continues through all of us. Let’s honor her by keeping the pressure on, amplifying marginalized voices, and demanding accountability everywhere.
