So Musk's 'free speech' drivel has had a little hiccup?

" Elon Musk has hailed Twitter as a bastion for freedom of expression ever since he acquired the social media site two years ago. But over the course of 2024, X, as it is now called, has evolved from what felt like a communal town square into a polarised hub where views and posts seem even more controversial "

Check out @aaron.rupar panel discussion at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia about #Twitter’s decline and fall under Elon #Musk’s erratic right-wing stewardship.

“The talk was titled, “#X and journalists: should I stay or should I go?” It was moderated by #PhilChetwynd, the big boss at #AgenceFrancePresse, and I was joined on stage by two of the foremost experts on the fraught social media landscape — #ZoeSchiffer, managing editor of #Platformer and author of the highly recommended book “#ExtremelyHardcore: Inside Elon Musk’s Twitter,” and #MariannaSpring#BBC…”

«En realidad, lo mejor de las redes sociales también es lo peor: nos conectan a las personas como nunca nada lo había hecho antes. Pero, además, están hechas a base de algoritmos que funcionan con reacciones extremas; todos los matices y la complejidad desaparecen, mientras nos bombardean con contenidos que nos enfadan, nos alegran, nos molestan o nos asustan. Juegan con esa parte de nuestra naturaleza.»

AI Deep Fake and politics.

There's a bad bad time lying ahead, as the powerful have a new tool for manipulating the uniformed/gullible. Seems clear to me, that publishers/platforms must be held to account in some way.

Faked images of black voters with Trump are a growing disinformation trend in the US election, the BBC finds.

@davidnjoku At present they are experimenting with a Mastodon instance to guage value vs effort. See here: https://social.bbc/about

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how much of a useful experiment it can be if BBC journalists aren't involved directly. It's the individuals working within BBC and posting to social media that are important, like #MariannaSpring. At the moment, the posts from the handful of accounts on there appear to be mainly promotional.
