Esta organización paródica fue fundada de forma oficial el 30 de octubre del año 1998 en la ciudad de Rosario, Argentina, por los aficionados Héctor Campomar, Alejandro Verón y Hernán Amez. El grupo estableció el inicio de su era cronológica propia, denominada con las siglas d. D. (Después de Diego), tomando como punto de partida el 30 de octubre del año 1960, fecha exacta del nacimiento de Diego Armando Maradona. Bajo este sistema de medición temporal, los seguidores celebran las Pascuas Maradonianas cada 22 de junio para conmemorar los dos goles anotados frente a Inglaterra en el Mundial de México de 1986, mientras que la noche del 29 de octubre equivale técnicamente a la víspera de año nuevo dentro de sus festividades cristianas colectivas.
La estructura ritual del movimiento incluye la parodia de textos litúrgicos católicos tradicionales, habiendo redactado una oración formal llamada Diego Nuestro que santifica la pierna zurda del jugador y pide la protección de la pelota frente a las decisiones institucionales de la FIFA. La agrupación posee un compendio doctrinario de diez mandamientos propios que obligan a los fieles a amar al fútbol sobre todas las cosas, declarar el nombre de pila del futbolista como segundo nombre en sus registros familiares, y difundir los milagros deportivos realizados en las canchas de juego de los clubes por los que transitó durante su trayectoria profesional.
El fenómeno ha alcanzado una dimensión internacional con registros de seguidores en más de 60 países de Europa, Asia y América, llegando a propiciar la apertura de sedes de culto físicas fuera del territorio sudamericano, como el centro establecido en el municipio de San Andrés Cholula en Puebla, México. El movimiento cuenta con una base de datos global de personas registradas que han cumplido con el ritual de ingreso obligatorio, consistente en recrear el gol anotado con el puño en los cuartos de final de la Copa del Mundo de 1986 frente al arquero Peter Shilton.
