OOSC 2025 - Online survey for Session 10-14 - The marine connectivity science and tools we need for the ocean we want
This questionnaire has been created to reach out to experts with roles and contributions to the management and/or conservation of the ocean and its resources. It explores the existing challenges and putative solutions to better gather, share and apply knowledge in Marine Functional Connectivity into decision-making, for improved management, protection and exploitation of the ocean and its resources. Marine Functional Connectivity (or MFC) includes all the varied movements of all marine organisms (from bacteria to whales) over their lifespan and all the resulting fluxes of genes, species and biomass, at sea but also at the land-sea interface. MFC controls the genetic diversity and the structure and resilience of populations, the taxonomic and functional biodiversity of ecosystems - and therefore their stability & resilience -, and the cycle of elements (like carbon) as well as the productivity of food webs. Applying MFC knowledge is key to maintain a healthy and functioning ocean and anticipate the evolution of the biosphere, but also to meet multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, from marine life conservation to climate regulation. MFC can play a central role in improving fisheries management and the control of invasive species, but also in designing effective networks of Marine Protected Areas, and in supporting the sustainable development of the Blue Economy through informed marine spatial planning, at sea and at the land sea interface. By sharing your perspective, you will help us generate representative data on expert views in order to inform future research priorities and policy decisions. These data will be included in a technical report that we are preparing for the IUCN-WCPA. This survey takes about 20 minutes to complete. Your participation is voluntary, and all responses will be processed anonymously. Please, do not share this questionnaire.
