So.....
#MapleSap officially "buddy" in northern #TwinCities as of last Thursday.
First Season over.
Damn.
Out of around 19 gallons of sap gathered from four trees, starting in late March, we burned about 38 ounces of sap and came away with 12 ounces of #MapleSyrup
Lots of lessons learned! Start earlier, careful cooking at the end, and also, i have another 4 or 5 trees to tap next year. 60-80 gallons of sap is not out of the question. Maybe 2 gallons of syrup if we do it right? More?
Enjoying a sugar hit, I see. Our local Norway maples and silver birches have started to produce sap, but I don't think I have ever seen a red squirrel licking it off the trunk of a maple before. I remember eating a maple sap icicle I found when I was kid. Have you tasted birch or maple sap?

Time for boiling maple sap. My friend Seth is collecting from 51 taps/buckets and the sap has been flowing strongly the last couple days. Looking at the warmer weather ahead this might be the last heavy flow.

Lots more details in the alt-text!
