The bill in question (the #TreatyPrinciplesBill) wanted to reinterpret the #TreatyOfWaitangi (1840), which upholds #Māori rights

The bill was defeated

I think the proper response to a bullshit punishment for protecting #MāoriRights is a lot more hakas

Maori call for King Charles III to intervene against New Zealand policies

🔊 Ascolta articolo - Tensions in New Zealand: representatives of more than 80 Maori tribes call for the British sovereign to intervene to defend their rights under the Treaty of Waitangi At a time of rising political tensions, representatives of over 80 Maori tribes have appealed to King Charles III to intervene in New Zealand […]

Weakening this agreement not only undermines Maori rights but also risks creating deeper divisions in society. Not honoring this agreement means returning to a history of injustice rather than building on reconciliation & respect for all. The agreement should not be seen as a gift from the British colonial power. It’s a hard-won right & an acknowledgment of their losses. It’s about acknowledging that the imbalances that were created still affect groups 200 years later.

42,000 crowd New Zealand's Parliament grounds in support of Māori rights

As tens of thousands of marchers thronged the streets in New Zealand’s capital Wellington, the column of people, flags aloft, had the air of a festival or a parade rather than a protest. They arrived Tuesday to opposed a law that would reshape the county’s founding treaty between Indigenous Māori and the British Crown. But for many, it was about something more: a celebration of a resurging Indigenous language and identity, with growing solidarity from non-Māori New Zealanders. What was likely the country’s largest-ever protest in support of Māori rights drew 42,000 people to New Zealand's Parliament.
