Back in Manila – A Walk through Malate, Pasay and Makati (Poblacion)

Walking in Manila on a sweaty 20 km weekend route from Rizal Park through Malate and Pasay to Makati’s Poblacion – street life, wrong turns, cold brew, and a surprise fiesta.

The routine has been the same ever since the rising tides of #ManilaBay began swallowing the island -- a seven-hectare speck of land in danger of sinking completely underwater

"Scooping water takes a long time. That's why my feet have started aching," the 65-year-old said, adding that she can spend up to three hours a day at the task

"I have to scoop out the water before my grandchildren wake up, or else they'll slip on the floor. But it's no use … there's still water"

Piles of trash pollute the #EsterodeBinondo stream in the #Chinatown area of Manila. From there, the #plastic flows into the #PasigRiver and out into #ManilaBay. The river eportedly accounts for 6.4% of all plastic polluting the ocean.

Woh! 😲 The #weather this morning is looooovely! 😊🙏So very cool. Like somebody turned on the air-conditioning for my side of the city. 😄!! Must be 20~22°C, I dunno. Felt really nice. ⛅🇵🇭

I enjoyed it very much! 🚴‍♀️ Funny thing is, I was supposed to go to a far away mall 🚌 near #ManilaBay for an event, but decided to join a group ride coz it's rare for them to plan* a ride in my city and they're going to a museum and my fave ecopark. 🤩 #cycling #bikes

But I got the day wrong.
The ride's tomorrow! 😅

#SMByTheBay's days are probably numbered as the part of #ManilaBay around it is undergoing reclamation. It might soon become "SM By The Canal". 😅

The local government of Pasay City is heading the 6.25 km² (625 hectares) reclamation project within its part of Manila Bay. The 3.6 km² (360 hectares) part of it is in partnership with SM Prime.

So, just expect for SM to relocate SM By The Bay to the new beachhead or breakwater. Though, I expect a totally new plan, something similar to #SeascapeVillage, in front of the #ManilaFilmCenter, in Pasay City, a commercial area with a beachfront.

If they just repeat the SM By The Bay design, which was similar to the old #Baywalk in the City of Manila, then they didn't learn anything from those two similar approaches. 😆
