Native to East Asia, it has been introduced to parts of Europe, where small feral populations now exist. Measuring around 41–49 centimeters in length with a wingspan of up to 75 centimeters, mandarin ducks weigh between 500 and 700 grams. Males are unmistakable with their ornate plumage, featuring bright orange “sails,” a purple chest, and bold facial patterns. Despite their exotic appearance, mandarin ducks are agile flyers and often perch in trees near calm waters. They feed on seeds, acorns, aquatic plants, and small invertebrates.

Sie wird etwa 41–49 Zentimeter lang, erreicht eine Flügelspannweite von bis zu 75 Zentimetern und wiegt rund 500–700 Gramm.
