Ebola: Two suspected cases arriving from Uganda have been hospitalized in Milan; in Congo, treatment centers are on fire.

Two Italian aid workers who were considered at risk of Ebola in Milan have been hospitalized at the Sacco Hospital, a specialized facility for infectious diseases. One is a 31-year-old man and the other a 33-year-old woman, both aid workers who arrived in Milan from Malpensa airport via a flight from Addis Ababa and returning from Uganda, where they had spent three months with Combonian missionaries in a region bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the country where the epidemic’s epicenter was identified, deaths continue to rise: official data from the Ministry of Health indicate 204 victims in three different provinces likely caused by the virus. The World Health Organization’s report from last Friday reported 177 deaths in the DRC out of 750 suspected cases, although the 82 officially reported cases and 7 deaths communicated by Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus were officially identified. A treatment tent for Ebola was set on fire in Mongbwalu, after angry and suspicious people set the fire due to the management of the health emergency. This had already happened in Rwampara a few days earlier.

The emergency continues to spread across Africa: the African Union’s health agency (Africa CDC) considers ten other countries at risk as the epidemic is spreading rapidly. These are: South Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Congo, Burundi, Angola, the Central African Republic, and Zambia. More than 50 international operators will arrive in affected areas to work alongside approximately 480 locally hired professionals. “The challenge today – explained Project Manager Valeria Greppi of Doctors Without Borders in Goma – is to treat patients with Ebola, trace their contacts, and at the same time ensure essential services and access to care for other diseases such as malaria, cholera, and HIV.” FIFA is also monitoring the outbreak: the national football team is expected to play in the World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, in three weeks.

The alert in Milan was triggered at dawn in Lurate Caccivio and Bulgarograsso, in Comasco. Their tests will arrive this afternoon. The two aid workers returned to Italy with five other people. Both have shown symptoms consistent with the contagion: high fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and neurological symptoms. They were transported to the Sacco Hospital in two ambulances and admitted to isolation rooms, while at the same time, a precautionary isolation was implemented for their families. The 33-year-old’s daughter had been affected in Africa by malaria, and the situation currently known does not rule out the Ebola virus. She may be admitted to intensive care.

If the Ebola contagion emerges, the patient would be transferred to the Spallanzani Hospital in Rome, the only Italian center considered capable of treating the disease. Close contacts would also observe an isolation period equal to the estimated incubation period of the disease: 21 days. The localized outbreak in the Ituri province was caused by the Budibugyo virus, which currently has no specific vaccines or therapies. The last Ebola outbreak in the DRC was identified in 2025; between 2018 and 2020, more than 2,000 people died.

AGI - È atterrato intorno alle 13 e 10 il volo della Turkish Airlines che ha riportato in Italia le salme dei quattro sub morti durante una immersione. I corpi di Monica Montefalcone, docente di biologia marina all'Università di Genova, di sua figlia Giorgia Sommacal e dei due giovani ricercatori piemontesi Federico Gualtieri, di Omegna e Muriel Oddenino di Poirino, nel Torinese, dopo le operazioni di sbarco verranno portate all'obitorio dell'ospedale di Gallarate (Varese), struttura di riferimento per l'aeroporto di Malpensa.
Da lunedì le autopsie dei quattro corpi
Qui, a partire da lunedì, saranno eseguite le autopsie. L'esame autoptico sarà eseguito su tutti i corpi, compreso quello di Benedetti, a partire dal pomeriggio di lunedì 25. La procura della Repubblica di Busto Arsizio, che opera per delega della Procura di Roma che ha aperto un fascicolo per omicidio colposo, affiderà l'incarico con i relativi quesiti a Luca Tajana, dell'Istituto di medicina legale dell'Università di Pavia, alla tossicologa forense Cristiana Stramesi, sempre di Pavia, e all'anestesista, rianimatore e specialista di medicina sportiva e subacquea Luciano Ditri, uno dei massimi esperti italiani in medicina iperbarica. I legali delle famiglie potranno nominare i propri consulenti di parte. La famiglia Gualtieri indicherà la dottoressa Carola Vanoli, medico legale dell'Asl del Verbano Cusio Ossola.
 A gestire la procedura è il sostituto procuratore della Repubblica di Busto Arsizio Nadia Alessandra Calcaterra, che opera su delega della Procura di Roma, a cui afferisce il fascicolo che ipotizza il reato di omicidio colposo per ora contro ignoti. Il magistrato bustocco conferirà lunedì in un' udienza in programma alle 12,30 gli incarichi ai periti. Le parti lese potranno nominare i propri consulenti di parte. La prima autopsia a essere eseguita sarà quella del capobarca Gianluca Benedetti, il primo a essere stato riportato in Italia.

Autopsies on the four bodies will begin on Monday. The autopsy will be performed on all bodies, including that of Benedetti, starting in the afternoon of Monday, May 25th. The public prosecutor's office in Busto Arsizio, operating on behalf of the Rome Prosecutor’s Office which opened a file for negligent homicide, will entrust the task to Luca Tajana, of the Legal Medicine Institute of the University of Pavia, forensic toxicologist Cristiana Stramesi, also of Pavia, and anesthesiologist, resuscitation specialist and specialist in sports and underwater medicine Luciano Ditri, one of Italy’s leading experts in hyperbaric medicine. Il Fatto Quotidiano: Flotilla, arrivati tra Roma e Milano gli attivisti italiani

Una parte degli attivisti italiani della Global Sumud Flotilla per Gaza, rilasciati dalle autorità israeliane, sono arrivati poco dopo le 23.00 di giovedì all’aeroporto di Roma Fiumicino da Istanbul, poi gli ultimi a Malpensa. Nella capitale turca erano giunti nel tardo pomeriggio a bordo di uno dei tre voli charter della Turkish decollati da Eilat con tutti gli altri attivisti di vari Paesi che avevano partecipato alla Flotilla. Ad attendere i 16 attivisti arrivati a Roma, un gruppo di parenti e amici con bandiere della Palestina. Dopo mezzanotte invece sono arrivati a Malpensa altri due attivisti italiani. “Hanno raccontato che sono stati trattati in modo abominevole, hanno visto trattare in maniera atroce anche delle donne, che hanno subito pesantissime violenze e molestie sessuali”, racconta all’AGI Maria Elena Delia, portavoce della Global Sumud Flotilla. “Hanno parlato dell’uso di taser, proiettili di gomma. Francamente li ho visti tanto provati. Non so quanto ci vorrà loro per superare questa esperienza, se mai la supereranno”, ha aggiunto.
“Mi prendevano per i capelli e mi tiravano su come trofeo“, oltre a subire violenze, sia fisiche che psicologiche e di aver vissuto per 48 ore in un campo di concentramento. Sono i racconti degli attivisti della Sumud Flotilla arrivati a Roma. “A chi hanno rotto costole, a chi hanno molestato sessualmente ma è stata anche una tortura psicologica. Per andare al porto mi hanno chiuso in una gabbia di ferro di un metro, dove non si vedeva nulla e fuori i cani che abbaiavano e graffiavano sul ferro”, spiega Antonella Mundu, toscana. “Se prima eravamo tornati umiliati ma sostanzialmente integri, stavolta torniamo letteralmente con le ossa rotte”, è invece il laconico commento di Luca Poggi, di 28 anni. “Mi hanno buttato a terra, riempito di botte in quattro, mi mettevano fascette sulle mani stringendole e poi le staccavano via tirandole. Ma ancora, cercavano di farmi uscire la spalla, oppure mi prendevano per i capelli e mi alzavano su tipo trofeo”, sono invece le descrizioni di Marco Montenovi, 43enne di Ancona. Attorno a loro un centinaio tra simpatizzanti, amici e parenti, che con slogan e applausi li hanno accolti per il rientro a casa.

A group of Italian activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla for Gaza, released by Israeli authorities, arrived shortly after 11:00 PM on Thursday at Rome Fiumicino Airport from Istanbul, followed by the last ones at Malpensa. In the Turkish capital, they arrived in the late afternoon aboard one of the three charter flights departing from Eilat with the other activists from various countries who had participated in the Flotilla. A group of relatives and friends with Palestinian flags were waiting for the 16 activists who arrived in Rome. Instead, another two Italian activists arrived at Malpensa after midnight. “They told us they were treated abominably, they saw women treated atrociously, who suffered heavy violence and sexual harassment,” reports Maria Elena Delia, spokesperson for the Global Sumud Flotilla, to AGI. “They spoke of the use of tasers, rubber bullets. Frankly, I saw them very distressed. I don’t know how long it will take them to overcome this experience, if ever,” she added.

“They would grab me by the hair and pull me up like a trophy,” in addition to suffering physical and psychological violence and having lived for 48 hours in a concentration camp. These are the accounts of the Sumud Flotilla activists who arrived in Rome. “They broke ribs, they sexually harassed them, but it was also a psychological torture. To go to the port they locked us in a meter-long iron cage, where nothing was visible and outside the dogs barking and scratching on the iron,” explains Antonella Mundu, from Tuscany. “If before we returned humiliated but essentially intact, this time we return literally with broken bones,” is the laconic comment of Luca Poggi, 28 years old. “They threw me to the ground, beat me four in the butt, they strapped bandages on my hands pulling them away, then they pulled them away by pulling my shoulder.
