A whole segment of a residential building had collapsed in #Astrakhan #Russia, rescue operation is in progress. Only over the last month there were three other similar accidents across the country - lifts crashed in #Makhachkala and #Kaliningrad, and gas explosion demolished a segment of a house in #Saratov

All of these were caused by poor - although it’s largely an euphemism - state of the housing infrastructure in Russia, long overdue maintenance and lack of repairs. Residents of the Astrakhan that collapsed have posted how their stairway looked like (below).

These housed had not been targeted by war or terrorism - over the last decades, under system created by #Putin, widespread theft, negligence and corruption had been tolerated on all levels. Since 2022 the additional factor is that the housing budgets, which were previously largely stolen, were redirected to the war.
