"Haystacks, Morning, Éragny," Camille Pissarro, 1899.

The great Impressionist Pissarro was best known for his scenes of contemporary urban life, but he enjoyed country life as well. Like his friend Monet, he undertook to paint the haystacks near his home in different lights and in different times of the year.

The summertime atmosphere is palpable here...one can easily imagine the dew on the grass and the sound of the leaves rustling in the wind.

"Haystacks at Giverny," Claude Monet, 1893.

Our old friend Monet and his haystacks! He painted this at the height of haymaking season near his home in Giverny. Few farmers in that area could afford a threshing machine, and anyway, a traveling thresher would come through, with a variable schedule. This meant haystacks could stand in the fields from late spring to the following January or February. Still, they made fascinating objects to study in different seasons and in different times of day.

This painting was recently sold at auction, for a staggering $34.8 million!

From a private collection.

"Hay Making," Jules Bastien-Lepage, 1877.

Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884) was famous for his agricultural scenes. He was a transitional figure from Realism to Naturalism, which later gave birth to Impressionism. His plein air paintings of peasants and farm scenes won him acclaim and financial security, but he sadly died young, apparently of cancer.

Here we have two peasants taking a rest from their labors in the fields. They both appear exhausted, with the woman seeming to dread any further work ahead. The metal lunch bucket by her feet indicate it's noon, and the haystacks in the background indicate the work already done.

He also did some history paintings and a few portraits (including a famous one of Sarah Bernhardt) but this is one of his most famous.

From the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
