For those designing and writing #software who haven’t learned that processing time can be a scarcity. 🙁

You’ve never submitted pre-designed code with obscure languages, typed up on cards, passed the deck to the Ops centre and waited (usually hours, sometimes next day) for a result. This was the batch, mainframe era. You learned to get the software to work, then optimise, maybe. 🤣☺️

From idea to deploy did get faster, more convenient and cheaper; Now you’ve moved back to mainframes.

For everyone who wonders about mainframes and computing, here's a great interview from @shanselman with Skylar Loomis, who actively works with the IBM Z.

It's illuminating and educational. And for those of us who live in a world of unreliable cloud machines, it's an interesting change of pace.

How IBM Z Is Modernizing Mainframes with Skyla Loomis

Scott talks with Skyla Loomis, General Manager of IBM Z Software, about the ongoing relevance of mainframes in 2026. They discuss the enduring power of mainframes, how generative AI is transforming COBOL modernization, and why enterprise infrastructure still runs on IBM Z. Skyla shares insights on developer experience, compliance challenges, and the misconceptions about mainframe technology in a cloud-native world.

Open Source for Linux on IBM Z & LinuxONE April update (late, I know)! 🐧

The team tested new versions of over 30 projects, including Apache Camel, GlusterFS and SonarQube. 3 more projects began running tests in our GitHub Actions runner infra (falcosecurity/libs, Meson Wrap Database & cpex-plugins for ContextForge). And CI was brought up by the jam (buildpack) and Microfetch (NixOS) projects.

I'm #mainframe old

Paying a monthly subscription just to emulate a 1970s green-screen terminal is absurd. So I built my own. Meet X3270: A free, native macOS TN3270/TN3270E emulator.

Built from scratch in pure C++ and Cocoa. No Java. No X11. No Electron bloat. It has implicit TLS 1.2+ via OpenSSL and full ISPF Query Reply support.

Free and open-source forever. Read the architecture breakdown on my blog: https://www.dockerr.blog/blog/modern-free-TN3270-terminal-client-for-mac-free

I wonder if #OpenHardware mainframes are a thing.

Like, I know open-hardware embedded systems are around, and there are some open-hardware laptops, but what about the opposite of those little machines?

Getting #AI to work reliably in production requires not just new tools, but integration with the legacy tools that still run systems of record at many large companies.

Updates over the last two months to workload and #mainframe automation tools from #Broadcom, #BMC and #IBM will begin connecting #agenticAI to systems at the heart of the most critical enterprise workflows.
