"Creating Woman, Life, Freedom was about taking action through art.

“At the start I was reposting on Instagram, which gave me the good conscience that I was doing something, but actually it was nothing,” she says.

“The only thing I can do is cultural work. (…)

This book is a message to the Iranian people to say, listen, you are not alone.” (...)

Masha Amini, the Kurdish-Iranian woman who died in police custody, is awarded EU human rights prize

Mahsa Amini, the 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman who died in police custody in Iran last year, sparking worldwide protests against the country’s conservative Islamic theocracy, has been awarded the European Union’s top human rights prize. The EU award, named for Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, was created in 1988 to honor individuals or groups who defend human rights and fundamental freedoms. Sakharov, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, died in 1989. Other finalists this year included Vilma Nunez de Escorcia and Roman Catholic Bishop Rolando Álvarez — two emblematic figures in the fight for the defense of human rights in Nicaragua — and a trio of women from Poland, El Salvador and the United States leading a fight for “free, safe and legal abortion.”

One year ago to this day, #Mahsa “Jina” #Amini’s young life came to a sudden and possibly violent end while she was, under questionable circumstances, in the custody of Iranian officials – maybe for the simple fact that she was a woman or because she peacefully objected to governmental #paternalism.
A tragedy that maybe could have been prevented or even a crime against her life.
What followed, is history – only #justice has not yet done the same, and until then, we will remind and remember!

Now, without any intention to take away from of the above in the slightest, let me ask all of you that do (and also those who don’t): did you do the same with regards to last May 11, the day I and many others commemorated the lost life of another brave woman: #Shireen Abu #Akleh?
She did nothing wrong, not even by the standards of any man-nade “law”; all she did was her job – flawlessly as always.
Unlike Mahsa / #Jina, she was provenly murdered (executed, to be precise) in ice cold blood and with an unbelievable amount of #cowardice and determination to take a life (from a distance and with almost certain #impunity) – because she was a journalist, because she loved and told the #truth, maybe because she was a woman, but in any case because she was a #Palestinian who peacefully, intellectually, consistently and boldly resisted a decade long and totally unacceptable #occupation – including illegal and immoral #dispossession, #exploitation, #dehumanization, ethic cleansing, #apartheid and #murder of and against men, women, grown and the smallest of children, the elderly and otherwise especially challenged – whether physically or mentally – as well as the sick and wounded and even entire families and neighborhoods which by now amounts to creeping #genocide of an #indigenous population.
Her enemies even sabotaged her funeral – her last day under the sun, shamelessly lying about their motivation to act violently another time and even blaming those who came to show their respects to the extraordinary human being she was. And, maybe worst of all, they keep protecting her killers from any #accountability whatsoever – like they always do when one of their own takes a Palestinian life. It should make you sick, sad and angry – but does it?

Once again I ask: what did you do in #ShireenAbuAkleh’s memory and in order to prevent more #injustice and #bloodshed in the name of a settler colonial project that pseudo-religiously and by employing a racial-#supremacist ideology belonging to a dark past we vowed to leave behind for good keeps masquerading itself as “self-determination” in a make-believe “homeland”?

Those who were less outraged and more silent about Shireen than about Mahsa Jina and their respective people, let me be frank, are nothing but #hypocrites – pawns of “Western” power at best. To them, I say in all clarity: shut up and try harder!

#OTD in 2022, Mahsa Jina Amini was murdered in Iran, fighting for women, life, freedom.

Anne Frank had words for her courage:

“I know what I want,
I have a goal, an opinion,
I have a religion and love.
Let me be myself and then I am satisfied.
I know that I am a woman,
a woman with inward strength and plenty of courage.”
