There was a small chance of seeing lights in the Stuttgart sky, and it was clear, so my husband @[email protected], and I bundled up and set off to look for the Northern Lights. I never imagined it would be like this. I was gazing at the stars, and a soft reddish glow danced across the silent horizon of the starry sky.

Backlit by golden winter sunlight against a dark backdrop of woods, the lace-like pattern of these frosty branches caught my eye. As I raised the camera to my eye to examine the scene more closely, a gentle breeze picked up, sending a flurry of hundreds of thousands of tiny ice crystals into the air all around me.
