I don’t mean to be a stereotypical Italian but I’m going to: Machiavelli’s thought is highly misunderstood. His political views have to be understood in the context of 16th century Italy; his main goal in writing ‘The Prince’ was to lay out a blueprint for the unification of Italy.

In other writings, such as the Discourses on Livy, he expressed admiration for a more democratic form of government, similar to that of the Roman Republic.
