Alte Hardware weiter nutzen

Statt auf das neueste Windows-Betriebssystem zu wechseln kann auch ein Umstieg auf eine der zahlreichen Linux-Distributionen in Frage kommen. Damit kann alte Hardware weiterhin genutzt werden.

Imagine this in a computer that is running microscopy equipment that runs 24/7. Why scientific equipment vendors continue to use Microsoft when Linux and other operating systems are an option is beyond me. Inertia? Stupidity? And their closed-source device drivers force us to keep their provided computers.

"What you’ve just experienced is Windows 11’s Second Chance Out of Box Experience (SCOOBE), a deeply deceptive and unethical attempt on Microsoft’s part to con you into buying more monthly services or using settings that Redmond wants you to have. SCOOBE can launch months or even years after you’ve first set up your PC and you can get it multiple times in your PC’s lifecycle, often after a Windows update."

"But SCOOBE is more than just an annoyance and a money-grab. It’s a serious problem for organizations with managed PCs."

shame that I use this when there are such good Linux

versions. It is strange that all: Nvidia, IBM etc, want
to install own USB-C driver. It is muddy just like it
was 20 years, nothing changing. Remember: install only
video driver and nothing more. Now Windows have more
clear incremental backuping. Overall, *MS WIndows* make
a little better impression than MacOS for me. It is a #dailyreport #jupyter #powerbi #mswindows

Steps to install latest Jupyter widgets in Debian/Ubuntu:

I got an abstract task to compare two slices of the some
table for different times - two xlsx files.

We plan to use PowerBI, but I began with Jupyter for
experimenting. I installed Jupyter with
widgets that allow to upload two files. I plan to
compare them by ID join then I will try to pick metrics #dailyreport #jupyter #powerbi #mswindows

My (Win10) computer just waited for me to take my coffee break to do a forced restart. No asking, no warning, didn't care that I had unsaved documents opened and Matlab running.
I am sick and tired of this. I have already tried all the tricks to pause updates that cause restarts (can't pause forever) and reduce the "active hours" (can't reduce them down to 0).

I want a program that completely stops forced restarts - does that exist? 🙏

My last try to acclimate with a #MSWindows OS was years ago after I left IBM when I bought a #SurfaceGo tablet. It didn’t work. Even though I liked the hardware, I didn’t use it.
Now I’ve given it a second life. I set it up with #Ubuntu #Linux using the #SurfaceLinux project.

Everything works fine but the pen. But Ian not sure if the pen still works at all.

More #MSWindows keyboard oddness:

Org set up and pushed out keyboarded layouts in several languages. #ESOL classes, so many people with many languages, so great! Students can easily switch to French, Arabic, Chinese, etc. input. Wonderful.

But, it took 20 minutes to find out how to add my dvorak back to the list - in "Advanced Keyboard Settings".

Next day, #dvorak is gone from the list. But, still applied in advanced settings.

BUT, suddenly the lock screen IS dvorak!

#WTF Microsoft??
