Sunny weekend in store as grey skies clear
Temperatures are still expected to dip below freezing at night, so motorists don't need to change their winter tyres just yet.

Interesting lunch time walk. On the footpath alongside the Dandenong Rd service lane and a driver goes *flying* past in the service lane, more like the 80 of the main road than the 50 of the service lane, there's only one problem ... service lane is one direction only and she's going against the traffic! Sudden screeching stop of her and the oncoming driver and a 3-pt turn and reverse park!
Two minutes later, a Mazda 2 approaches, slowly drives down the side road to the roundabout, does a u-turn around the roundabout and drives off back the way she came, there's only one problem, the entire manouever was carried out driving on the wrong side of the road and going the wrong way around the roundabout. Couple of minutes after that she drove past me again, driver's side flush up against the right kerb, off down the wrong side of the (empty) road
Three minutes after this, a driver slowly approaches a roundabout, amazingly, both on the left and in the correct direction. Angry bogan comes flying up behind, leans on the horn and overtakes ... by going the wrong way around the roundabout, and disappears with much tyre squeal
Clayton drivers. Always exciting. Never predictable

Motorists and community expectations
"An obstetrician who was drunk when he killed a young woman and gravely injured a man in a crash in Perth. Rhys Bellinge was jailed for 10 years and six months after killing Elizabeth Pearce, 24, and causing lasting injuries to Uber driver Muhammad Usman, then 25, when his high-performance Jaguar ploughed into their Honda Jazz." >>

"Jake Danby hit two Aboriginal men with his car on a Darwin street, killing one and injuring the other. He was handed a 12-month community corrections order, with five months in home detention. Danby’s home detention was increased from five months to two years, as three court of criminal appeal judges upheld the application. Danby had bragged in text messages that the man he killed was an “oxygen thief” and he would not go to jail." >>

WA's political leaders are at odds over the sentence given to obstetrician Rhys Bellinge for a fatal drunken car accident, with Premier Roger Cook backing it and Opposition Leader Basil Zempilas saying it was "on the light side."
Hit and run motorists, pedestrians and the justice system
"Sentence extended but no jail for NT hit-and-run driver Jake Danby who called victims ‘oxygen thieves’. In June 2024, Jake Danby hit two Aboriginal men with his car on a Darwin street, killing one and injuring the other."
The "driver had bragged in text messages that the man he killed was an “oxygen thief” and he would not go to jail. He called it a “two for one combo” and texted it was “pretty funny watching them roll around on the road after going over my bonnet”.

Now #local #elections are back on in my region, the #GreenParty really needs to step up its campaigning to avoid #Reform or worse fash parties gaining a further foothold.
Its not going to be easy as #Suffolk and #Essex are some of the most car-dependent parts of #England - Greens really need to fight back hard against paranoia and conspiracy theories levelled against them and reassure #motorists they are not going to force everyone out of their #cars if they still drive #petrol and #diesel vehicles and pick more realistic timescales for phaseout of these.
As much as I dislike "leaving things to the market", the reality is spare parts for older cars (15-20+ years) are getting hard to find anyway unless popular with enthusiasts, whilst EV's are steadily rising in popularity..
That as well, but @cstross really is talking about the test that motorists have to pass.

It's in the theory test nowadays.
